National Library of Rio de Janeiro

Today I will tell you about the National Library of Rio de Janeiro

Located on Avenida de Mar. directly in front of Cinelândia and the VLT trail, the National Library was built in the early 20th century. It is next to the Museum of Fine Arts and very close to the famous municipal theater.

The library that is one of the largest in the world receives around two million visitors per month, with nine million pieces. It houses the largest bibliographic and documentary collection in Latin America. The eighth in the world.

The National Library is an institution that comes from the time of Dom João Sixth. The first shelter of the library was at the Hospital do Ordem do Carmo. Over time, the building could no longer support the amount of work there, it needed a new structure. It was moved to what is now Rua do Passeio has a three-story building as a structure.

In 1822, due to the law of legal deposit, it was determined that all publications made in Brazil should be deposited in the National Library. Since then, this law came into force, allowing the National Library to store and catalog Brazilian literary and documentary production. that is, it is a law that guarantees cultural memory.

In 1891 Dom Pedro Segundo and donated the collection to Mrs. Teresa Cristina María, were more than 100 thousand pieces. In 1905 the building that would house this Collection was built. The project was carried out by the engineer Francisco Marcelino de Souza Aguiar.

The building, together with the municipal theater, the building of the national court of the National Library, are the only remains of the early twentieth century in that region that was the Central Avenue.

It was built with steel beam and with an eclectic style. Mix the neoclassical with art nouveau. Art Nouveau It was widely used at that time, it can also be seen in the structure of the Confectionery in downtown Colombo. What a beautiful building, it is worth looking at.

The stores have glass floors. Auxiliary frames are made of steel, pneumatic rooms. To transport the books from the warehouse to the reading rooms. This structure was designed to protect the collection of insects, pests and fire. which is very important since historical buildings such as the Quinta da Boa Vista National Museum caught fire recently.

The Corinthian columns of the external environment and the skylights of the central space with its impressive stained glass windows make this environment a tourist spot that draws attention not only for the library’s collection, but the building itself is already a spectacle.
