HOW PUBLIC TRANSPORT WORKS IN RIO DE JANEIRO

Rio de Janeiro has undergone several changes with regard to transport offers and all this aiming to organize and improve the experience of people in the city. However, if you do not know the basics of operation, you risk getting lost when trying to use public transport options for the first time.

1 – BUSES

– The vast majority of buses that travel in the city of Rio de Janeiro have entrance in front and exit behind.

– Some buses have two boarding roulette wheels to speed up the boarding process for multiple passengers, but paying cash requires you to use the driver’s closest roulette wheel to get in.

– A part of the bus also has wheelchair adaptation, having the exit door to the center of the bus, with an elevator and an interior space for the wheelchair passenger to accommodate.

1.1 – BRS

– The buses have been categorized with a BRS number ranging from 1 to 5

– Certain parts of the city have specific points for each number of BRS. So any bus that

1.2 – BRT

– It has 3 types of buses (Express, Parador and Direct). Check which options stop at both the boarding and the boarding station:

Express: Stops at express service stations and at certain times at some stop service stations. (Ex .: Pingo D´Água x Alvorada, which, from 9h to 16h, stops at Guaratiba Island)
Parador: Stops at all stations.
Direct: Special service that stops only at the destination station.

– Please note that express bus and stop boarding platforms are not in the same location.

– Security at stations is not very good

2 – SUBWAY

– Pay attention to which side of the platform passes the subway in the direction of travel you want.

– On weekdays, between Central and Botafogo stations, lines 1 and 2 go through the same platform. Care must be taken to board the correct train.

– Weekends and holidays, the transfer between lines 1 and 2 only happen at Estácio station.

– Line 2 stations from Maracanã to Pavuna are not considered very secure.
