Security in Rio de Janeiro

Unfortunately in Rio and in most large cities the risk of assaults or robberies is high, so we must follow some recommendations to avoid these problems.
I am a Carioca, and I live in Rio 28 years ago, in Copacabana 10 years ago (since 2006), I go out alone day and night, I usually walk, and most of the time on public transport, what I do is follow the recommendations below:

1. Do not show that you have money

Keep your money and documents in a wallet.
Do not count large amounts of money in public
Go with a couple of R $ 20 bills of easy change, so most of the time you do not need to take more valuable tickets.

2. Do not carry valuables

Avoid wearing flashy objects, which can become the target of some ill-intentioned.

  • necklaces
  • pulse watches
  • bracelets
  • earrings

3.Wear clothing and bags, backpacks or suitcases that make it difficult to access your belongings.

The vast majority of the assaults in Rio are of individuals who take something and run away or run away, without the injured perceiving it, so if your handbag has some way of closing and making access difficult, the risk decreases a lot.
For backpacks or suitcases, in places with a lot of people like the subway or buses, it is better to keep it in front of the body, so they can not get something out without being able to see it.

4. Confirm the price of what you are buying

Unfortunately it is normal to find sellers who try to take advantage of it, so it is better to confirm the prices, confirm on the invoice and change.
Ask if you have change for the value you are giving, so the person will know that he is attentive to his money (for example: “he has change for 50”)

5. Precautions on means of transport.

5.1 UBER
It is the most recommended transport, for price, in the attention is possible the qualification of the drivers, the only bad thing is that sometimes the drivers do not know the route well, being at the mercy of the GPS, but that can happen with taxi drivers too.

5.2 Taxis

Try using applications to call taxis or take them at specific points, in this way it is easier to locate or report in case of any inconvenience.
Preferably use a route application, to confirm the way, WAZE or google maps are examples.

5.3 bus or bus
Try to sit in the front of the bus, close to the driver, prefer the chairs of the corridor, not the window, and in case of staying in the window, be careful when using the cell phone or camera.

6. Walking on the street at night

Try to know if the streets to your destination have movement, that is, in terms of people or establishments, in case you do not have that knowledge better take a taxi or Uber.

7. Bars, Clubs, Ballads, Boates

What we have to take into account, being in these environments is to take care of our drinks, so that nobody puts anything in without realizing it, that applies to any place, but anywhere, we know that it is something we all think about, however It is good to mention it, since Rio is a very festive city.

These are the safety recommendations that I follow, I hope they are useful for everyone.
